· They frequently provide false low or high readings often right from the start and they cannot be easily checked and adjusted (calibrated)- if at all. RESULTING UNRELIABLE READINGS CAN BE OBTAINED WHICH CAN LEAD TO PERSONS DRIVING WITH ALCOHOL LEVELS EXCEEDING LEGALLY PRESCRIBED LEVELS. THIS CAN LEAD TO ARRESTS AND HEAVY FINES. 

· They can provide readings from substances in the breath other than alcohol such as smoke and acetone in the breath of diabetics and the people on some low calorie diets. Certain sweets and breath fresheners can provide false readings. THIS CAN LEAD TO FALSE ACCUSATIONS. 

· They are normally flimsy in construction and will not last. They should be regarded as toys. 

· Because the sensor should normally be heated, they are very heavy on battery replacements.

CHOOSE YOUR SUPPLIER CAREFULLY  

Care should be taken not only in the choice of instruments but also in the choice of your supplier. 

A suitable supplier should be able to:

· Tell you how to make your equipment quickly pay for itself by reducing accidents, injuries and losses.  

Provide guidance with regard to legal issues, which arise. 

· Advise you as to which instruments would be most suitable in your situation

· Constantly maintain a comprehensive stock of instruments and accessories such as mouthpieces, printer roll and ribbons, calibration equipment and software.

· Repair faulty instruments rapidly, irrespective of the fault. 

· Provide training and certification for instrument operators where required. 

· Assist you in the development of substance abuse policies and programmes.
